Main Ideas and Key Points:
What the author was trying to inform us about was what doctors don't tell pregnant woman or pre-pregnnt woman. Doctors aren't use to telling their paitients about the risks of chemicals and the environmental hazards that they are exposed to that increses the risk of their baby on having problems when being formed. Some of these chemicals are mercury, gasoline, polychlorinated biphenyls, lead, and even air pollution. Test have shown that some doctors just rather not tell their patients either to not make them nervous, scare them off, or they just feel like they aren't ready to tell their patients about all these things. Woman in middle and higher class tend to ask more questions bout the environmental risks that can affect the growth of their baby than woman in lower class. The doctors of pregnant woman in lower class most likely don't tell their patients much about these chemicals or the environmental problems they should be aware of because the woman already have enough problems. These problems for babies consist of sthma, fertility problems and others. Doctors have been focusing more on obesity and centralizing their attention on that problem when their is a lot of other problems too.
My cousin is 1 year old about to be 2 and I still remember that I was so anxious and how I just wanted the best for her and her health. Through all the research I had done while my aunt was pregnant I hadn't came across these things. I wonder if its just because I hadn't searched correctly or this information is not as known. If I were a doctor I would tell my patients about all the risk because afterall they should be well informed because that may help a baby be born healthy or healthier. This information will help me a lot because my other aunt is pregnant right now and I could inform her on things like this that I am sure she is not aware of. Or maybe she does know but doesn't know why she should be aware of them. Like my aunt she knew that fish was bad for you but she didn't know why. My mom always thought that it was because some people did not cook it right which I guess it is true but I don't think that is the biggest concern from doctors. Mercury in fish is the biggest concern for us Asians.
What doctors can do is first be noted about these issues and new research findings that can help pre-pregnant and pregnant woman to have a healthier baby. Second, for it to be a requirement to tell and inform their patients about this information so that they can be aware. Third they can provide pamphlets with greter details or t summarize what they talked about so that the woman don't forget. In the long run even if it does make the womn more anxiou, scared or nervous they would be gratefull that they were informed and that they did their best to raise a healthy baby. Fourth, they should make suggestions on what they can eat or do to be less exposed to the dangers they and their baby face.

- Some docotrs say that they don't feel as confident in their bility to talk about these problems to their patients.
- Doctors care more about / focus more on obesity.
- Every pregnant wome already has lead, mercury, toluene, perchlorate, bisphenol A, flame retardants, perfluorinated compounds, organochlorine pesticides and phthalates in them.
- In a survey only 19 percent of the doctors said that they talk to their pregnant patients about pesticides and only 12 percent discuss air pollution.
- Only eleven percent said they mention volatile organic compounds, which are fumes emitted by gasoline, paints and solvents.
- Nine percent of the doctors told their patients about polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), industrial compounds often found in fish.
- Mercury in the womb has been tied to reduced IQs and other effects on developing brains.
