1: What observations did Rachel Carson make about her environment? Explain in detail.
In a town where all life lives in harmony. Her environment had various trees and lots of wildlife. Despite all the wildlife and the abundance of birds and other animals much of the wildlife there were many problems. Birds were dying, People were dying, Cattle were dying, Hens layed eggs but chicks did not hatch. Roads once lined with blooming flowers were dead
2: How have chemicals changed the environment? What is DDT? What is it used for and what are the consequences of its use?
Chemicals have changed the environment by contaminating nearly everything. DDT can lead to the poisoning and death of many animals. Often DDT can get stronger and stronger but no matter what there will be insects immune to the DDT. No matter how strong these chemicals the pests there designed to kill will find a way to survive.
3: Carson uses Robert Frost’s poem, The Road Less Traveled, as an analogy for making choices about our future- what does she say about what we must do?
We should look for solutions to pests without using chemicals. There are varieties of chemical control of insects available. Carson says that some have already been created and some are in the stage of laboratory testing. She says that these solutions are biological. It is based on the understanding of living organisms we seek to control and also the whole fabric to which these organisms belong to. Entomologists, pathologists, geneticists, physiologists, biochemists and ecologists are putting all their knowledge to create a new science of biotic controls.
4: This book was written in 1962- have people heeded the warning about the toxins in our environment?
es, people have heeded to the warning about the toxins in our environment. Some laws passed include the Toxic Substances Control Act (1976) and the Food Quality Protection Act (1996). People have begun to take notice to the toxins in our environment and it will be these steps taken in order to make sure out environments stay healthy.
5: What is your opinion of the book excerpt? Explain.
This book is extremely informal and brings to light many of the things people don't think about. This will help people make better decisions and help us keep our environment toxin free. While at the same time keeping control of pests.
