We have always been innovating things around us so they fit to our needs. This way of thinking has gotten to the idea of GMOs. These GMOs are everywhere in the 21st century, it's at your local food market, they're everywhere. They do seem beneficial since additional nutrients can be added, they can be modified to increase crop yield, but what many don't tell you is the consequences of GMOs. It can affect your health and the environment around you. Since GMOs are unpredictable when it comes to this, why are we using them?
With the introduction of GMOs there are a lot of things that can happen; you can get severe allergies from that piece of toast you ate in the morning that happened to be genetically modified to contain a gene from peanuts. As I said before GMOs are unpredictable, and difficult to trace. Now if 1 GMO was lethal enough, imagine what would happen if it got to all of us. We would all be dead, simply because we needed to meet our needs. Shouldn't we regulate these foods, the only facts were told is how beneficial they are and how they last longer, how we get more vitamins from them. But do they tell you these things, would you want to regulate them now, maybe even ban them altogether?
After knowing all this GM foods should be regulated, they probably shouldn't be at foodmarkets at all. Since what effects they can have on your body is unknown who knows what could happen. Shouldn't we properly test them before we release them. Many GM food companies are releasing these foods to fast without proper testing. What do you think of these profit seeking companies? A great example of a GM food would be the starlink corn. At first we ate them, but then it was concluded that they cause allergies. So they were fed to cattle, pigs, and other farm animals. The problem is we eat these animals, it's the same as eating the starlink corn. Now whose job is it to protect it, we have government bodies who are suppose to prevent this such as the Food and Drug Administration, Department of Agriculture and the Environmental Protection Agency. If Starlink corn are known to cause allergies then why are they fed to the animals we eat?
The problems also don't end here unfortunately. Another problem would be the environmental effects of GM foods. What if these GM foods caused the extinction of a species in a environment. Although this hasn't been seen yet there are less serious matters occurring that could kill us, Corn being fed to cows. Now this may not be seen as a problem but Cows aren't adapted to eat corn. Because of this digestion is slowing down in cows, naturally a Cows stomach is extremely acidic which helps break down the grasses they eat. But with the introduction of corn the Cows stomach is becoming more basic and bacteria are able to adapt and take resistance genes from GM corn. This caused the death of a little boy due to E coli pollution.
GM foods should be regulated or banned altogether. We need to prefect GM foods before we release them onto the shelves of food markets. Would you want something so unpredictable being eaten by your families, your friends. I bet not, so what can we do to stop this. If we prefect this method we can see plenty of benefits and minimum consequences.
