DDT BAN PERSUASIVE ESSAY
With the ban of DDT, many children in Africa have been slain by Malaria. Malaria is mainly contracted from mosquito bites, and approximately 207 million cases of Malaria are recorded per year. However, Malaria has been prevented in the past with the help of the pesticide DDT. Even with the benefits of the pesticide, there have been debates considering DDT’s negative aspects on both humans and the environment. Because of these aspects, the USA has banned the use and distribution of DDT. This ban, prove that the use of DDT shouldn’t be used in the country of Africa despite its small benefits.
DDT should stay banned since it causes major risks on our marine ecosystem. An example would be the land near the Channel Islands. The sea floor was covered with tons of DDT waste, causing many sea organisms to be harmed. Marine animals that are affected by DDT were crayfish, daphnids, sea shrimp and many species of fish. One may think that we could just easily change the location of dumping after the revival of DDT, however, how long would it take just to relocate the pesticide and how much DDT would be created in this time span? We can’t project an accurate time that’s close enough to lower the risk of more sea organisms to being in danger. The sea floor around the Channel Islands isn't the only one affected; also the animals on the actual island can be affected due to bio magnification.
Another reason that DDT should stay banned is that the Bald Eagles can be sent back to the Endangered Species list since they take home on the Channel Islands. In the past, the Bald Eagles were affected greatly due to DDT because DDT caused the thinning of the Bald Eagles’ egg shells. The thinned eggshells help lower the population of Bald Eagles since the mother wouldn't be able to sit on them without breaking them. Any other person would think that the Bald Eagle would be not be a necessity of our biosphere considering that its “just a bird”, however, the Bald Eagle is the most free bird that represents the USA and that it is an indicator species that help show ecologists if the environment is lowering/failing. An ecosystem is essential to support the Earth and its inhabitants, however, some inhabitants are harming the Earth, like humans.
Overpopulation of humans is causing a lot of damage on Earth, and we need to reduce the situations that have been produced by humans. Humans have destroyed more of Earth than mainly any other species. Humans have polluted the air and the water, have deforested many times, over-exploited a lot of other species, and we even use our resources to help ourselves without benefiting the environment. So why not use Malaria to kill some of the population? Others may think I’m being inhumane, being a “bad person”, and even a possibility of being a mass murderer. However, we need to destroy the problems at the roots; we need to destroy some of the human race. DDT is a bad factor in our society.
The harm that DDT causes to both humans and our ecosystem makes it one of the least viable options in mosquito control. Along with the harm to the ecosystem and the rise of the human population, DDT’s use is more harmful, filled with negative aspects. Even with these negatives, the use of DDT has been helpful with the dramatic fall of the mosquito population, and the pesticide has been widely recognized as one of the best poisons to occur to save the human race. DDT may be known as some great for the short run, however, the Earth will most likely fall to its demise faster. So here’s the question that I’m dying to hear the answer to, is it really worth the Earth to just save yourself from a few mosquitoes?
